Bandu Manamperi

Bandu Manamperi had his art education at the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. Belonging to a generation of radically active young artists, his work finds its inspiration within the present Sri Lankan social and political context.

Manamperi's practice includes sculpture, installation and performance. He takes as its subject matter the extreme commercialization of cultural symbols in sri lankan society. His arguments are drawn from the consumer demands and commercial practices that have appropriated conventional cultural domains, religious and ritual spaces to create saleable objects and what he considers an unbearable consumer practice. He engages in a critique of this process, and at the same time attempts to find alternate ways of looking at these new practices. He has also worked on the theme of war and its effects on the society through his performance work.
