International Artists Workshop 2006 – Hantana
Theertha held its 3rd International Artists Workshop (IAW 2006) from 19th March to 2nd April 2006 in Sri Lanka. Nineteen international and local artists from the fields of visual art, performance, theater and dance lived and worked in the site where they produced number of fascinating artworks. The artists who participated were:
Anushka Weragama (Sri Lanka), Catriona Stanton (Australia), Cora Lang (Argentina), Damith Sendanayake (Sri Lanka), Etagweyo incent Onokurte (Nigeria), Hamad Khalaf ( Kuwait), Lakeesha Fernanado (Sri Lanka), Lasantha Chandana Kumara (Sri Lanka) , Lukas Tam Wai Ping (Hong Kong), Manish Lal Shrestha ( Nepal) , Mehraneh Atashi ( Iran) , Naveid Iqbal ( Pakistan), Niranjala Gunasinghe (Sri Lanka) , Sameera Macan Marker (Sri Lanka), Sarath Premasinghe (Sri Lanka), Selladurai Suntheresh (Sri Lanka) , Sri Lal Ranaweera (Sri Lanka), Surekha ( India).
The IAW 2006 was held at the Ratnasiri Wicramanayake Training Centre facility situated in the beautiful hills of Hantana amidst the green and lush tea estates. Hantana hills are better known for its mountainous eco systems in Sri Lanka and is 20 minutes away from Kandy, a historically significant town which was the last kingdom of Sri Lanka before it became a colony under the British empire in 1815.
The artists were engaged in collaborative as well as solo works. They included installation, performance, painting, sculpture, photographic work, video work, dance and earthworks. Artists mostly used locally available material and responded to the site making use of history of the site and energies pertaining to its immediate environment.
The workshop ended with an ‘Open Day’ event where all works produced at the workshop were exhibited on site. Open Day drew a large crowd from Colombo, Kandy and the surrounding areas. The visitors on the Open Day included artists, art students from universities as well as schools in Kandy and surrounding areas, art teachers, media personal and the public. Around 300 people were present at the Open Day.
