It will also channel the community energy to preserve and manage and also value the heritage as collective responsibility. This would also emphasis that irrespective of which ethnic/ religious root reflects these cultural and historical property it is nevertheless be viewed as part of  overall Sri Lankan heritage and therefore it is the collective responsibility of the immediate community to preserve and respect it.

Exhibition of Art by  Tsunami Effected Children: It is estimated that nearly 400 schools have been seriously damaged, and approximately 4000 children have been displaced due to the calamity caused by the Tsunami waves that swept the Sri Lankan coastal areas on 26th of December 2004. In collaboration with the Goethe Institut in Colombo, Theertha has been conducting a program at the Kithulewela Jayamaha Vihara relief camp at Matara to provide attention and care for the displacednchildren. Through visitations every week Theertha members provide them with a play environment by introducing games, and engaging in drawing and painting activities with children. The program  held for a period of one year. Some of the artworks done by these children were exhibited at the Goethe Institute in May 2006.

Theertha International Artists’ Residency 2006 Exhibition: The International Residency Program 2006 invited three local and three international visual artists to work together for 30 days and to mount and exhibition.  The residency was held from 1st to 30th June 2006 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The artists participated in the Residency were Jamil Baloch (Pakistan), Mahmudur Rahman (Bangladesh), Rohan Amarasinghe (Sri Lanka), Sanath Kalubadana (Sri Lanka), Sumedh Rajendran (India) and  Thisath Thoradeniya (Sri Lanka). The residency was sponsored by Hivos and Ford Foundation.

International Women Artists’ Residency 2006 Exhibition: International Women Artists’ Residency was part of the international art exchange program of Theertha that is being held regularly.  The primary objectives of the International Women Artists’ Residency are to support and sustain the diverse art activities among women artists in Sri Lanka and to give opportunity to connect with the women artists working in other geographical and cultural backgrounds. Participating artists were Kaif Ghaznavi (Pakistan), Sabrina (India), Fathimath Zuhura,   (Maldives), Lakeesha Fernando (Sri Lanka), Sakunthala Galange (Sri Lanka) and Noeline Fernando (Sri Lanka). The residency started from 29th July 2006 and ended on 28th August 2006. The Residency Exhibition was held from 23 to 27th August 2006 at the Goethe Institute, Colombo.



(A)critical Intimacy: An art exhibition by seven women artists that highlights an intimate process of art making. The artists exhibiting in ‘(A)critical Intimacy’were Dhanushka Amarasekara, Marie Gnanaraj, Neranjala Gunasinghe, Anoli Perera, Menika van der Poorten, R. Vaidehi and Anoma Wijewardene. The exhibition would be a project that would create awareness on women’s contemporary art practices.

Maze:  An exhibition of collaborative installation and performance art by Bandu Manamperi and G.R. Constantine. The exhibition was held at the Lionel Wendt Gallery at Colombo from 2nd to 4th November.  The exhibition was sponsored by the Theertha International Artists Collective.  The single collaborative installation and performance in this exhibition addressed the cultural, political and social aspects of the current socio-political dominant behavior in relation to the ongoing ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka.
