Theertha International Art Residency 2005: International Art Residency Program 2005 invited four local and international artists whose work experience includes sculpting. The four artists participating in the residency program were Stephen Mckenzie (Sweden), Joy Deb Roaja (Bangladesh), Torin Chandrasekara (Sri Lanka), and Nishantha Rukmal Hettiarachchi (Sri Lanka). The work produced during the 24 days of the residency gave us an insight into the energy invested by them and their experimental, innovatively playful and serious absorption in their work. Sri Lankan Art: 20th Centaury:  Through most of its programs Theertha has brought awareness of art to the regional and economically difficult communities.  Since 2005 Theertha has intensified this awareness building and added another emphasis which is to develop art audiences across borders of ethnic, cultural, religious and geographical boarders.  A large exhibition  on ‘20th century Sri Lankan Art’ was put together on 49 panels, digitally printed giving the history of Sri Lanka art narrating visually and textually in Sinhala. The exhibition started touring Sri Lanka from 2005 September ( Dehiattakandiya, Aludeniya, Gampaha, Colombo), which will tour for 2 years.  A Tamil version of the exhibition was put together which toured the eastern province (Ampara, Akkaraipattu and Sammanthurai) in February 2005.  In each place an audience of around 4000 –5000 consisting of art students, school children, art teachers and the general public has viewed the exhibition.

Theerha staff exhibitions:
Majority of the staff working at the Theertha office and the Theertha core group are practicing artists. In the past Theertha has noticed that most of these artists’ creative output being effected as Theertha work seem to take priority.  Although Theertha only works on 3 days to give rest of the days to do their creative work, artists tend to ignore this to meet deadline.  While Theertha appreciates their commitment to Theertha, a rule has been enforced now to make sure the Theertha artists be active in their art practices. That is “every artist who works for Theertha have to hold an exhibition or do a new art project within 14 months time”. Following exhibitions were held during 2005.

• K. Pushpakumara held the first exhibition under this scheme in February 2005 at the Fenomenal Space Gallery.

• Jagath Weerasinghe has scheduled an exhibition ‘Celestel Underware’ to be exhibited in June 2005.
