"Love that can't be expressed: the War, the soldiers, and the memories in everyday life" by Sanath Kalubadana- Pradharshana Wasanthaya 2007

by anurakri last modified 2008-08-18 12:34

An exhibition was held by Sanath Kalubadana
titled "Love that can't be expressed: the War, the soldiers, and the memories in everyday life" from 14th to 31 october 2007 at the Red Dot Gallery.

Artist's Concept

He can feel the hunger
He can feel thrist
He can feel the pain
He can feel love
Solder is human and where does he exit from my life?

The exhibition would consist of a series of relief sculptures and installation by Sanath Kalubadana .   He investigates the personal perceptions of one has of soldier and how these perceptions get confronted with the popular and socially constructed imagery of soldier. His earlier work recorded the way families construct monuments within their houses for their dead sons and husbands who have been soldier. These become the domestic monuments of war. Similarly in this work Sanath looks at the solider in very humane way. He is looked upon as a  person who feel anxieties and emotions, and who comes from the similar social and cultural conditions like the artist himself. As said before everybody has their own personal view of soldier. This personal view is sometimes shattered by the media hype and the political interventions where the soldier is elevated to a hero and savior of a nation and sometimes made into an agent of aggression, a murderous killer or a rapist.  So…who are you soldier???
