‘Crafting the Drawing’ Workshop

by anurakri last modified 2008-08-14 21:27

For the past 6 years Theertha has been encouraging experimental and art that works with new and unconventional mediums in order to promote innovative art practices that would challenge, question and go beyond the established art making practices. As a result of this patronage provided by Theertha many new art expressions have been explored by number of artists and help to establish new trends in art.  Encouraging performance art, installation, earth works etc. has produced very interesting art by the artists’ community. However, this has also moved artists away from engaging in conventional art expressions such as drawing.  Even within the Theertha artists drawing as an art expression has become not a final art expression but merely exists as a preliminary exercise for their larger work.  This has prevented artists from thinking innovatively on drawing.  As such, Theertha organized a drawing workshop as a program to stimulate new ways of thinking about ‘drawing’. The workshop was named ‘Crafting the Drawing’ which emphasized new way of engaging in the practice of drawing with combining certain elements involved in craft practices such as repetition, decoration, patterning, detailing etc along with elements of conventional drawing such as spontaneity,  drawing from nature/ life etc. Jagath Weerasinghe presented a lecture tracing the history and development of ‘drawing’ as a art practice which generated a discussion on ‘drawing’ in the contemporary art practices. Drawing workshop was held at the Theertha premises from  16th to 19th May 2007.
Participated artists were Niranjala Gunasinghe, Anoli Perera, Sarath Kumarasiri, Pradeep Chandrasiri, Janananda Laksiri, Tisath Thoradeniya, Lakisha Fernando, Sanath Kalubadana, Vijitha Bandara, Lalith Manage, Koralegedera Pushpakumara , Prasanna Ranabahu and  Bandu Manamperi.
